What primary services do you offer?
We offer mathematics, statistics, and mathematical science support, including programming applications, for middle school, high school, college, and other students. This includes students taking courses about or including mathematics and students preparing for standardized tests such as the SAT®* and ACT®* as well as future soldiers preparing for the ASVAB*. We offer comprehensive standardized test prep to help you reach your goals!
What does “mabuhay” mean?
“Mabuhay” (pronounced ma-Bu-hai, not ma-Bu-hey) is a Tagalog word meaning “live,” and is commonly exclaimed as a greeting or a toast. It’s like saying “Welcome!” or “Live long!” or “Live well!” and always with genuine feeling and excitement. Mabuhay Mathematics is a toast your mathematics-driven success. Mabuhay!
What experience do you have?
Justin has over a decade of experience in private tutoring, 5 years of experience teaching college mathematics courses, and 5 years of experience guest-teaching and coaching academic competitions at the high-school level.
In his undergraduate years, he studied pure mathematics and minored in physics. He holds a master’s degree in applied mathematics and is pursuing a doctoral degree in applied mathematics and statistics. He is currently engaged in mathematical biology research, using mathematical and statistical models in metabolism, associated with his dissertation, and uses mathematics as a regular tool in personal and professional life.
Services and Benefits
What technology is required for the remote services?
All services provided through our website are completely remote, so a stable internet connection is required.
For the best experience possible, a web-connect camera and microphone are necessary to ensure efficient communication during the session. A high-speed internet connection is also recommended to minimize connection issues. Sessions are typically conducted via Zoom, but Skype, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts are all feasible alternatives at the request of the student. The instructor will share live writing from a tablet as needed. Students are not required to have the same capability.

What benefits can you offer a struggling student?
In keeping with our growth mindset, we would never judge students based on their level of achievement. By understanding each student’s experience, we can work together to identify and address barriers to success that the student is experiencing. Once these barriers are removed, fundamentals can be processed and applied more readily and productive study habits can be built. Eventually, struggling students find that they can really achieve, and as they experience more success, their self-efficacy rises with it.
What benefits can you offer an advanced student?
Sometimes, people get the impression that advanced students don’t need support to reach their goals. This is symptomatic of a fixed mindset. Whether your goal is to excel in your class or to excel beyond your class, the right support can get you there.
Students can receive guidance in setting and reaching long-term goals related to mathematics and science, learning how to apply mathematics in personal or professional life, and learning other topics that are not available to them in their current academic environment. If you really want to understand your potential and the potential that mathematics and statistics offer, you will be well supported at Mabuhay Maths!
What are the benefits of consultations?
For some students and parents, it’s not so much the content as it is the organization and integration of academics into the rest of life’s chaos that’s difficult. Consultations provide an opportunity to openly discuss your situation, apparent or known barriers to success, and a concrete plan for how to achieve academic goals. This often involves an honest discussion about study habits and behaviors that may or may not be limited to scholastics.
Need help searching for college and applying to college? We can support you in finding the right schools and working through the application process with our consulting services. Depending on your needs, this can include support with writing college essays, scholarship searching, applying for scholarships, applying for financial aid, and answering other questions you may have about finding and choosing a college.
Others may require less time to ask and discuss their maths and stats questions, or perhaps just seek confirmation about the work they are already doing. Great work! A consultation will provide time for these services without the need to purchase additional coaching or tutoring. Consultations are also a great option for students who want to focus on their overall academic tenacity, or for academically tenacious students who are already operating more independently, but enjoy coming to Mabuhay Mathematics where their success will always be celebrated!
What are the benefits of 2h tutoring sessions?
Several different students prefer a 2h session to 1h, and the reasons are quite varied! Students may need the additional session time in order to…
– process new concepts and skills at a more comfortable pace
– spend dedicated time addressing a certain type of problem or problems (e.g. word problems)
– work through more complicated and more advanced problems (some maths problems take one page or more to solve!)
– address more advanced topics or make real-world connections that are not being tested in school
– solve a larger quantity of problems with guidance in a single session
For comprehensive standardized test prep, I almost always recommend the 2h tutoring sessions unless the student has already demonstrated a high level of academic tenacity and consistent use of advanced study habits.
Do you offer services other than one-on-one sessions?
We also host free remote events where we introduce our fundamental study habits and teach students and parents about common standardized tests (like SAT®* and ACT®*). Payment and Scheduling
How do I pay for remote services?
We offer several options to pay for your remote sessions, including credit card, Apple Pay, and PayPal. If you have any questions or concerns regarding payment, please contact us directly any time.
What happens if I need to cancel or I miss my appointment?
We understand that life happens, and sometimes unexpected events get in the way of our scheduled mathematics time. If you schedule a session, but need to reschedule or cancel, there will be no charge to you if you do so at least 24 hours before the appointed start time.
If you cancel your scheduled session less than 24 hours before the start time, or if no student shows up to the appointment, payment will be due in full for the scheduled service. In the event that you need to cancel on short notice, consider a rapid-reschedule (contact us directly for details) or refer a friend for the same appointment time in your place.
In the spirit of reciprocity, if we need to cancel a scheduled appointment with you less than 24 hours in advance of a session, your next appointment for the same service will be free!
