Educational Philosophy

Your success is our first priority!

Ultimately, we want any student who works with us to feel confident that they are well-supported to develop a sense of self-efficacy and to achieve whatever mathematics-related goals that they set. To this end, our program is built around skills and behaviors that we believe will lead to lasting success.

Fundamentals First
Regardless of age, grade, or course level, gaps in knowledge or skill can cause a great barrier to mathematical achievement. We’ll work with you or your student to identify and correct any such gaps and ensure a solid foundation upon which you can learn and master the math you need. If a topic is brand new to you, no problem!  Let’s build the fundamentals together so you feel confident in moving forward.

Importance of Repetition
Mastery is attained through consistent and high-quality repetition, and the amount of repetition a student needs is highly personal and can vary from topic to topic. Students attain as much repetition as time allows in session through guided practice, but additional practice outside of sessions is usually required. This additional practice is crucial to reaching learning goals, and needs to be considered in scheduling homework and study time.

Expert Time Management
Set a clear path to achieving your goals with professional time management skills!  Students today have more on their plates than ever. On top of an array of classes and assignments, many are engaged in clubs, sports, jobs, and other activities in- and outside of school. We teach students how to organize their obligations across their schedules in a manner that’s sustainable and effective!

FAQ

Meet your instructor!

During my time as an undergrad student, circa 2010, I started tutoring privately and with various tutoring services in the Baltimore area, and supported many students’ success in their courses and standardized tests.  Since 2014, I’ve had various positions teaching high school and undergraduate mathematics, in Colorado, including as a funded graduate student and as an adjunct professor.  My experiences both teaching in classroom and tutoring were a large motivation to start Mabuhay Mathematics!

I have a master’s degree in applied mathematics and am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in the same field.  When I’m not teaching or doing math research, I like to spend time with my family, go hiking and rock climbing, play music, and practice martial arts.  I’m half-white and half-Asian, and my Filipino heritage has always been important to me, hence the inclusion of the Tagalog word “mabuhay” in our name!
